AST
Winter has arrived and it is wonderful to still see so many of our students participating in active travel! When temperatures turn colder it can be harder to get outside and be active, but just by walking to or from school can be a great way to get some fresh air and exercise. Coming up on December 11th, we are going to have a Winter Walk to School Wednesday! Let's see how many students we can have participating when the weather turns wintery!!
Healthy Snacks for School
Just a friendly reminder that if you are bringing in treats for your child's class, would you please consider bringing in healthy snacks. Thank you so much!
Wellness Committee
Did you know that sugary drinks are the largest source of sugar in the Canadian diet? It can be tricky to identify sugary drinks when drinks such as 100% organic fruit juice, flavoured milk, energy drinks, and vitamin water are often marketed as “healthy”. The sugar is actually hidden in the label under various names (e.g. fructose, dextrose, syrup, agave, molasses). Food labelling changes have begun being implemented so look for new labelling that can help suggest healthier choices. For more information, go to Healthy Drinks, Healthy Kids or Choose Healthy Drinks. Thank you to the School Council and DCE Administration for removing juice from the Hot Lunch menu in support of a healthy school food environment. Healthy kids = better learners!
Looking for more variety when it comes to healthy, low sugar snack ideas for school and parties? Check out these recipes for Nut-Free Energy Balls and Black Bean Brownies. The new Canada food guide suggests that preparing your own food also supports healthy eating habits. So make it a family event and have your kids prepare these snacks together.
