Mustang Memo - April 25, 2025

Welcome our new furry Paws for Reading dog, Ivy!

This week, the Grade 4 students demonstrated exceptional leadership skills as they hosted our Earthy Day assembly. They sang a beautiful song about having only one world and how we need to respect it and take good care of it. They taught us all about ways we can reduce waste through recycling and re-using objects. They reminded us of the importance of turning off lights when we leave the room as well as tips on water conservation like turning off the faucet when brushing your teeth! To top it all off, our Grade 4 students kicked off the Soles for Souls shoe drive!

Great work, Grade 4!

We also celebrated our incredible volunteers at our volunteer tea this week. Our kindergarten students sang cute songs and shook their egg shakers in honour of the amazing people who make our school special. Thank you to our Leadership students for hosting the event, serving food and greeting our special guests at the door.

Thank you to all of our volunteers!

Donations for Mustang Mention Prizes

The Wellness Committee is now planning for our end-of-year Mustang Mentions prize draw! Last year, our DCE students LOVED this end-of-year celebration honouring our DCE students! There were so many prizes won and shout-outs delivered. We'd like to make our Mustang Mention prize draw bigger and better this year so we can hand out more prizes to even more DCE kids!

Here are the details: In June, DCE will hold an assembly with students to draw names from the many Mustang Mentions that our students have been awarded all year. With each name drawn, a student will win a great prize! The more prizes donated, the more prizes we can gift to students.

We are now seeking donations from our community to offer a range of awesome prizes. If you, or your business would be interested in donating any prizes, please email dcewellness@gmail.com. It would be amazing to gift as many prizes as possible to our DCE students! We can also offer a shout-out in a future Mustang Memo and on our Facebook page to any businesses that donate. No time to buy a prize? DCE will also accept cash donations so we can purchase prize items ourselves. We are truly grateful for any help and support and so are our kids! Below is a list of prize ideas:

  • Basketballs/ Soccer balls/Footballs
  • Outdoor yard/lawn games that kids could play independently or with friends outside
  • Millennium Place or other local activity passes that children can use over the summer
  • discount coupons
  • Kids Sprinklers for water play
  • Scooters
  • Bubbles
  • Sidewalk chalk
  • Tickets to visit Edmonton attractions
  • Any other fun outdoor play items!
  • Other ideas and cash donations are also welcome!

OPPORTUNITY

May 7 is WOW Wednesday!

With the weather warming up, it's a great time to take the opportunity to participate in the next Walk and Wheel Wednesday at DCE! This coming Wednesday, May 7, which is also early dismissal day, our students (and their parents) are encouraged to walk, bike or scooter to school for a chance to win a classroom prize at the end of the year!

Parents driving their children to school can park a little further away and walk part of the way to school together with their kiddos! For our students who take the bus, you are encouraged to walk or run around the soccer field twice at recess! Enjoy the sunshine and get outside with your kiddos!

Family Literacy Night & Used Book Drive May 15

Save the date! Our popular Family Literacy Night is coming on May 15 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Like last year, we'll have many great opportunities to celebrate reading including a used book sale.

During DCE's Literacy Night, we will also be holding a book drive! Between now and May 15 please bring your gently used books to Davidson Creek Elementary. During literacy night all our donated books will be on sale for $1 per book. All proceeds from the sale will go towards school resources for our students!

STEAM Night at Lakeland Ridge - May 8

Lakeland Ridge is excited to host a STEAM Night (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math)!

Students in grades 3-9 from Lakeland Ridge and Davidson Creek Elementary, along with their families, are invited to join Lakeland Ridge for an evening of hands-on learning and discovery.

Come explore over 20 interactive stations, including: paleontology, geology, a robotics  battlefield, welding, 3D printing, cartooning, stage makeup, and so much more!

Paws for Reading Comes to DCE

This week welcomed a new furry friend to our school - Ivy the Paws for Reading dog! Ivy's owner is one of our DCE grandparents who graciously invited some of our students to meet Ivy for some playtime followed by a nice opportunity to cuddle up and read a good book. Our students had a great time reading to Ivy, who is a very good listener! Thank you to Mary Smith-Latta for bringing in her precious service dog to encourage students to love reading each week!

Citizenship in Action - Election Day at DCE

Did you know that our school was selected by Elections Canada as a polling station for the Federal Election on Monday? What a great opportunity for our students to witness citizenship and democracy in action!

How will it work?

Our gym will be out of use for the day as citizens come in to cast their ballots. Voters will come through the front doors, go into the gym to vote and then exit via the front doors. The staff washrooms in the south-east hallway will be used as a public washroom. Elections Canada is providing security personnel who will monitor people coming into the building to ensure that the general public only accesses the gym or public washroom.

We have asked our staff to ensure that our students are not using the gym or the foyer area throughout the day. Staff will also supervise children using the washrooms or hallway near the public washroom.

We are excited to provide students, especially those in Grade 6, with a first hand view of how elections work as a culmination of their learning about democracy and government in social studies. Citizenship in action!

Parents make the difference

Here is this week's article with helpful tips for families:

Five easy strategies can help you build your child’s self-confidence

Self-confidence can have a positive impact on your child’s academic and social life. When students believe in themselves, they’re more likely to take on challenges, persevere through frustration and achieve goals.

To inspire self-confidence, celebrate your child’s effort, progress and achievements. Consider these ideas:

  1. Send “fan mail.” Praise your child’s efforts in a short note, poem or silly riddle. Sign it, “From your biggest fan” and leave it where your child will find it.
  2. Create a mini-museum. In addition to the refrigerator, designate a wall in the house as a place to hang your child’s art, writing, test papers and certificates. Change the “exhibits” often.
  3. Make a date. Each month, devote one day to doing something your child enjoys and does well. Write it on the calendar. Let your child choose what to do.
  4. Have a testimonial dinner. Put your child at the head of the table and have each family member say something nice about the honored guest. Encourage siblings to participate by reminding them that their turn will be coming.
  5. Give a good night boost. When your child is getting ready for bed, take time to chat about something your sleepyhead did well today.
